Carpal tunnel syndrome
In carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), pain, tingling and loss of strength can interfere with daily use of the hand. We look beyond just the complaint and immediately address the cause, with the aim of a lasting result.
How acupuncture and herbs help you with Carpal tunnel syndrome
Step 1: diagnosis
Step 2: treatment
Step 3: recovery
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a complaint that we regularly see in practice. It is a condition where acupuncture is certainly worth considering, partly to prevent wrist surgery. This is because an operative procedure and its recovery can be stressful. Learn more about how we can help you reduce pain without side effects.
Causes and symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
In carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), the middle nerve of the hand — the median nerve — becomes trapped in the wrist. Possible causes include overload, injury (trauma) or a hormonal imbalance, for example due to fluid retention.
The main symptoms include:
- Pain in the palm and fingers
- Pain radiating to the arm
- Tingling
- Stiffness
- Loss of strength
- Clumsiness or dropping objects
- Trouble using the hand or arm (properly)
Often, the little finger stays out of pain and tingling, but not always. The middle and ring fingers are usually the most sensitive.
Carpal tunnel syndrome during and after pregnancy
Carpal tunnel syndrome may occur during pregnancy. When the hormone balance is disturbed, fluid accumulation can occur. This puts pressure on the nerve in the wrist. The nerve becomes pinched, causing pain symptoms.
Often, these complaints disappear on their own. When this does not happen, or when the pain is severe, acupuncture can be a safe and effective way to relieve the pain.
Carpal tunnel syndrome can also develop after pregnancy. One possible cause of this is overload. Against the background of fatigue due to childbirth and interrupted nights, the body can be less stressed. In combination with many repetitive movements — such as holding the baby, preparing bottles and changing — overload can occur over time.
With our balance-oriented treatment method, we can support both pain symptoms and a possible hormonal factor.
Acupuncture for carpal tunnel syndrome
With our acupuncture method, pain relief is often experienced even during treatment. By repeating the treatment, the pain-free period usually becomes longer and longer until treatment is no longer necessary.
Acupuncture has several well-researched effects that are relevant to carpal tunnel syndrome:
- Improves local blood flow
- Stimulates the production of the body's own pain relieving substances
- Promotes the release of natural anti-inflammatory substances
- Has a calming effect on the nervous system
There are therefore several reasons to use acupuncture for carpal tunnel syndrome. Don't keep walking around unnecessarily in pain and feel free to make an appointment.
Acupressure in carpal tunnel syndrome
In the video below, you can see an effective wrist stretching exercise. In addition, two acupressure points are used that can support the wrist area well: Pericardium 6 and Driewarmer 5.
Pericardium 6 is also known for its relaxing effect, which can be a valuable addition.
Treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome with herbs
Many pain symptoms recover well with acupuncture. Sometimes, however, complaints are persistent, intense or complex. In such cases, herbal therapy can be a valuable addition, possibly in combination with acupuncture.
Because herbs are taken daily, the therapy works deeper and is often better suited for long-term or intensive complaints.
Complex pain symptoms are regularly associated with a reduced flow of blood and energy, as well as an accumulation of waste products. These factors can hamper recovery. Herbs can support this process from within and help restore balance.
In addition, herbs contribute to strengthening the body and building strength. When the body — or a specific area — is weakened, this can also lead to pain. This can be seen as a form of unintentional overload.
Complaints where the above factors may play a role include:
- Muscle atrophy (decreased muscle mass)
- Redness and swelling (inflammation)
- Recovery after pregnancy
- Recovery after burnout
- Long-term or chronic complaints
